Supply of plasma and recombinant products
Australia has a local supply of plasma-derived blood products, including clotting factor and other products. We also import products that we either don't make or don't make enough of to meet the ongoing demand.
Some of the products we import are made using recombinant or other modern technology. Recombinant products are not made from human blood.
All plasma and recombinant products supplied in Australia, whether domestic or imported, meet the same guidelines set out by the Therapeutic Goods Administration(Opens in a new tab/window).

Australia's plasma products
CSL Behring manufactures and supplies domestic plasma-derived products under the National Fractionation Agreement for Australia(Opens in a new tab/window).
Under this agreement, CSL Behring manufactures 13 different types of products made from plasma. Australian Red Cross Lifeblood (Lifeblood) collects the plasma from donations. The plasma-derived products CSL Behring supplies include immunoglobulins, albumin, and clotting factors.
The current agreement with CSL Behring was signed in 2017. It is in place for 9 years, until 31 December 2026.
Imported immunoglobulin supply
We have contracts to supply imported immunoglobulin (Ig) products with:
- CSL Behring
- Grifols
- Octapharma
- Takeda.
The manufacturers supply both intravenous Ig products and subcutaneous Ig products under these contracts. These products are listed on the National Product Price List.

Contracts for imported products
We have contracts in place to import products not made in Australia.
- recombinant (genetically manufactured) factor VIII and IX
- plasma-derived factor XI and XIII
- anti-inhibitor coagulant complex concentrates
- fibrinogen concentrate
- protein C
- plasma-derived intravenous Rh D immunoglobulin
- C1 Esterase inhibitor concentrate
- other products as required.
