Australia's national blood supply is centrally coordinated to ensure adequate, safe, secure and affordable supply of fresh blood products. The Australian Red Cross Lifeblood (Lifeblood) is the sole provider of fresh blood products in Australia. The National Blood Authority (NBA) manages the supply and funding through a Deed of Agreement, which sets out the blood supply and funding arrangements between the NBA, on behalf of all governments, and Lifeblood.
This annual report presents key data and trends regarding the issues, transfers, discards, and order priorities of fresh blood products over both five-year and ten-year periods. The fresh blood products included in this report are red blood cells (RBC), platelets, and fresh frozen plasma (FFP).
This report excludes paediatric fresh blood products, cryo-depleted plasma, cryoprecipitate, plasma for fractionation, and serum eye drops.
